City Council Approves Sherwin-Williams Plan To Build Hangar at Cleveland Hopkins
CLEVELAND, Ohio – Cleveland City Council on Monday approved a lease with Sherwin-Williams that will allow it to build a hangar at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport.
The paint giant intends to use 5.8 acres of land it will lease from the city to build a new structure to house and maintain its fleet of corporate jets, which are currently stored at a privately-operated hangar elsewhere on Hopkins’ campus.
The city hasn’t said what it expects to charge Sherwin-Williams annually for the land, but it will be “based on a fair market appraisal” that will be subject to annual increases based on Consumer Price Index adjustments, according to city records.
The company will also be required to pay fees for fuel and lubricant, plus the total cost of construction, including new or enhanced utility lines, and ramps and taxiways.
The land is located along West Hangar Road, off Brookpark Road, in an area of the airport that’s largely dedicated to corporate aviation operations.
The lease will run for 30 years. If it is eventually allowed to expire, anything built on the property would revert to city ownership.
Construction on the hangar is expected to begin in the first half of 2023 and wrap up about 12 months later.
The plans come as Sherwin-Williams continues construction on its new downtown Cleveland headquarters and Brecksville research and development facility – a combined $600 million project that includes hundreds of millions of dollars in public subsidies in the form of tax breaks, grants and other funding from Cleveland, Brecksville, Cuyahoga County and the state. Both facilities are expected to be complete in 2024.
