A small plane crashed off the runway while landing at Gillespie Field Sunday, but the pilot and a passenger walked away uninjured, authorities said.

The plane — a single-engine Cub Crafters CCX-2000 registered to a San Diego County resident, according to Federal Aviation Administration records — crashed about 10:40 a.m. at the county-owned airport just south of state Route 52 and west of state Route 67.

The pilot, who told authorities he was "experienced," lost control while landing, causing the aircraft to go off the runway, tip over onto its right wing and spill a "significant" amount of fuel, Heartland Fire & Rescue Capt. Ryan Abell told OnScene TV.

The pilot and his passenger stepped off the plane on their own, Abell said.

County and city of San Diego hazardous-materials teams "mitigated" the spill, Abell said.

The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board will investigate the crash. No further information was immediately available.
