Plane Malfunction Prompts Emergency Landing Outside Upland Airport

June 1, 2021

A flight instructor was forced to make an emergency landing Monday onto a city street outside Cable Airport in Upland after the Cessna he was flying began losing power, police said.

Upland police responded to a report of a plane crash on Benson Avenue, across from Cable Airport, at 6:11 p.m. The flight instructor and his student pilot, both of who were not immediately named, suffered minor injuries and were treated and released at the scene, Sgt. Andrew McCullough said.

McCullough said the pilot and his student were flying circles over the airport, practicing take-off and landing, when the plane started losing power. Unable to make the runway, the flight instructor was forced to make an emergency landing outside the airport.

"They lost power somehow and they landed on Benson (Avenue)," McCullough said.

While the incident created quite a spectacle, it didn't cause any major disruptions to traffic. "They got the plane moved out of the way quickly and opened Benson back up," said McCullough. He said the scene was cleared by 7:30 p.m.

The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating.

Federal Aviation Administration records show that the 1969 Cessna 150K fixed-wing is registered to Swigart Davis Holdings Inc., whose president, Anne S. Davis, is also the manager of the Foothill Flying Club at Cable Airport. The listed address for Swigart Davis Holdings Inc. is also Cable Airport.

The Foothill Flying Club is a private pilot school and aircraft rental business operating at Cable Airport.

"I have no comment," Davis said when reached by telephone Monday at the Foothill Flying Club.
