(TNS)

A flight instructor and a student pilot walked away uninjured after a small plane went off the runway at Montgomery Field airport Sunday, authorities said.

The plane apparently crashed through a chain link fence on the west end of the airport and ended up on the northbound lanes of Kearny Villa Road about 12:50 p.m.

The road, which borders the airport, was closed to traffic. Flights were diverted to Brown Field airport in Otay Mesa and Gillespie Field airport near El Cajon, according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.

The plane crash resulted in a spill of about 45 gallons of aviation fuel, the fire department said. A hazardous-materials team was sent to clean up the spill.
