Single-Engine Plane Crashes One Mile short of Long Island Runway
A single-engine plane crashed Saturday on its final approach to Republic Airport in Farmingdale, Long Island, authorities said.
The plane, a Mooney M20R, went into woods about one mile south of the airport at about 4 p.m., the Federal Aviation Administration said. It had taken off about 25 minutes before from Gabreski Airport in Westhampton Beach.
State police responded to the crash scene near the Southern State Parkway in East Farmingdale.
Troopers on Saturday night had no information on the identity or condition of the pilot, who was the only person on the plane.
FAA records show the plane, manufactured in 1988, is registered to an address on E. 87th St. on Manhattan’s Upper East Side.
The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board will determine the cause of the crash.
