Steffen Dohrmann, 38, Director Production and Material Planning, MTU Maintenance, Langenhagan, Germany

Although Steffen Dohrmann has only been with MTU Maintenance for six years, he’s always found aviation captivating. Particularly now, as there is strong engine MRO growth and the products and technology are fascinating. Also, from a production planning perspective, the processes are complex and it is an exciting challenge to meet customer needs as volumes grow. “My job is to interface between various departments and manage their needs, but most importantly, also those of our customers – making sure we get their engines back to them reliably, on time and at the highest quality that they are used to from MTU,” he says.

Prior to MTU, Dohrmann worked in the hydraulics field, also in production planning and management. When he joined MTU, he was in charge of planning for piece parts. Then, he moved into planning for piece parts and the DAT areas, and now he is in charge of all production and material planning at MTU Maintenance Hannover. The role also includes coordinating material from headquarters in Munich and the engine OEMs, as well as used serviceable material sourced by the purchasing team.

When people join MTU, they are given a starter plan where they go around and meet people from different but relevant departments. “It is really important to me to take the time to explain the planning processes within the shop, even if the employees aren’t directly in my team,” Dohrmann notes.  “We want to be working towards one common goal – making the customer happy – and it is important we understand each other to achieve that. I also support new colleagues in the planning department and make sure their careers get off to a good start too.”

Dohrmann says that it is important to have a motivated team, that they enjoy what they do and that they can continually develop and improve processes. “As long as that is the case, I am happy” he says. “It might sound geeky, but there is nothing more satisfying than finding a way to make a process more efficient!”
