How Delta TechOps Helps AMTs Build Steady and Rewarding Maintenance Careers

“Delta is very intentional about developing talent that helps employees grow both within and beyond maintenance.”

Key Highlights

  • Delta TechOps invests in talent development through partnerships with over 50 A&P schools nationwide and mentoring programs.
  • A supportive, high-expectation environment fosters safety, teamwork and continuous improvement among aviation maintenance professionals.
  • Leadership stories, like Sal Giaimo's, illustrate the diverse career pathways and the importance of passion and curiosity in aviation maintenance.

In a time when ongoing labor shortages work against rising demand for aviation maintenance, encouraging new professionals to enter the aircraft maintenance industry is increasingly important.

Some organizations, like Delta TechOps, are taking action to build the AMT workforce and support aviation professionals in building their skills and pursuing their passions.

What is working at Delta TechOps like?

“Delta TechOps has shaped me into the leader I am today,” says Sal Giaimo, managing director of aircraft line maintenance at Delta TechOps.

He continues, “I’m fortunate to work with professionals who challenge the status quo and never give up—an environment that has strengthened my leadership, resilience and problem-solving skills.”

As managing director of aircraft line maintenance, Giaimo oversees the teams that maintain Delta aircraft that are in service. Some of his key job duties include:

  • Setting standards
  • Supporting frontline teams
  • Delivering safe, reliable and efficient maintenance for Delta aircraft

Giaimo shares, “I oversee maintenance operations for Delta’s diverse fleet, which includes Airbus and Boeing aircraft platforms. This spans both narrowbody and widebody fleets—the diversity of the fleet adds complexity, but it’s also one of the things that makes the work interesting.”

Discussing the work environment at Delta TechOps, Giaimo notes, “It’s a high-expectation environment, but it’s also very supportive. People here take pride in their work.”

He adds, “I work alongside people who never settle for average and who are always striving to improve. There’s a strong culture of safety, teamwork and support—people genuinely push each other to get better every day.”

Giaimo reflects on his experiences at Delta, stating, “Working for Delta opened doors I had only imagined: the opportunity to grow professionally, take on increasing responsibility and experience the world through the lens of a truly global airline.”

He says, “There’s a sense of pride and privilege in being part of an organization where effort is recognized, standards are high, employees treat each other like family and people are given the chance to build long-term careers doing work that matters.”

How does Delta TechOps foster career and skills development?

In the age of next-gen technology and rapid innovations across the aviation industry, a key part of building a career in aircraft maintenance involves closing skills gaps and honing technical abilities.

Giaimo shares how Delta TechOps encourages and facilitates skills and career development, explaining, “Delta is very intentional about developing talent that helps employees grow both within and beyond maintenance.”

He continues, “There’s a clear framework for career progression, and it starts even before people join the company through partnerships with more than 50 A&P schools nationwide.”

“Delta invests heavily in the skills development of our own, but also the next generation of aviation talent,” says Giaimo.

He elaborates, “For example, AMTs at our JFK station volunteer extensively with mentoring and training students enrolled at New York’s Aviation High School, where many of our employees graduated from.”

How to pursue a career path in aircraft maintenance

There’s no one right way to build a career in aircraft maintenance, with various entry points into the field and countless opportunities to transition into different maintenance roles.

For example, Giaimo clarifies that hedid not start his career with an apprenticeship—a common starting point for AMTs—but with a position in airport customer service. He explained that his career progression is largely thanks to Delta’s internal support.

Giaimo says, “My early experience was on the customer-facing side of our operation, which turned out to be valuable once I moved into maintenance, giving me a broader understanding of how everything is connected.”

Reflecting on his motivations for pursuing an aviation maintenance career, Giaimo shares, “As a kid, I loved building and fixing things—engines, motorcycles and anything mechanical.”

He continues, “When I moved to the U.S. from Italy, I flew for the first time and was amazed by the sheer power and thrust an engine could produce. That moment sparked a deep curiosity that turned into a career.”

“With strong support from family and friends, I pursued my A&P license at Delta partner school, Vaughn College, while I was working on Delta’s Airport & Customer Service team and began my career in aviation maintenance,” Giaimo notes.

Delta helps to connect aspiring AMTs with partner schools and other career opportunities through its platform Delta TechU.

Giaimo explains, “Over time, Delta gave me opportunities to grow beyond the technical side of the job and invest in myself as a leader. I went from doing the work to learning how to lead and support others in how they do the work, taking on increasing responsibility and advancing into leadership roles along the way.”

Emphasizing the career mobility Delta offers, Giaimo elaborates, “The most valuable opportunity has been the cross-departmental exposure that Delta TechOps not only allows but encourages.”

He stresses, “Transitioning from Airport Customer Service to Aircraft Line Maintenance gave me a broad operational understanding that shapes my perspective and decision-making today.”

“Joining Delta TechOps felt like the realization of a dream that started with my first flight,” Giaimo affirms.

He adds, “It was the reward for years of discipline and hard work—balancing demanding studies with fulltime work—and represented the start of a meaningful career in an industry I truly love.”

How can aspiring aviation maintenance technicians start their careers?

As aviation maintenance is a complex, layered area of expertise, there are many avenues that people can take to find the right career path.

Whether someone is young and new to the workforce or experienced in a different field, Giaimo notes that there are resources to offer guidance, such as the DeltaTechOps Careers Overview Fact Sheet.

Giaimo advises, “Learn as much as you can about the industry and the different paths into maintenance. There’s no single entry point, and today, there are more opportunities than ever—even for those who don’t yet have an A&P license.”

Giaimo says, “Curiosity, work ethic and a willingness to learn go a long way.”
