Drone Crashes in Japanese Primary School, Man Arrested

June 11, 2020

Tokyo (dpa) - A man was arrested in Tokyo in connection with a drone that crash-landed into a primary school, Japanese broadcaster NHK reported on Wednesday.

The accused let the 800-gram device fly over a densely populated residential area without permission, in contravention of Japan's laws regulating drones, NHK said.

Nobody was reportedly injured in the incident.

Drones have become increasingly popular in Japan in recent years, accidents are not uncommon.

Japan's aviation law prohibits drone flights in Tokyo, over other densely populated areas and around airports.

A government permit is required to operate drones and the devices may not be flown at night.

Operators violating these rules could face fines of up to 500,000 yen (4,655 dollars), while flying a drone under the influence of alcohol or drugs could result in a prison sentence of up to one year.
