FAA Announces Draft Plan for Unleaded Avgas Adoption

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has published the draft of a plan for a widespread transition to unleaded aviation gasoline.

After making the Transition Plan to Unleaded Aviation Gasoline available online, the FAA encourages aviation professionals to review the draft plan and leave comments with feedback.

Goals outlined in the FAA’s new draft plan include phasing out 100LL fuel by 2030 in the contiguous United States and by 2032 in Alaska, with the plan highlighting:

  • Phases of the transition
  • Timelines for transition
  • Fuel authorization pathways
  • Actionable steps for pilots, airports and aircraft owners

This plan also showcases challenges that may arise when transitioning to unleaded fuel from 100LL, such as:

  • Regulatory
  • Logistical
  • Technical

The FAA identifies key benefits of stakeholder feedback, such as:
