Aviation Industry Works To Address Concerns Surrounding Evolving Passenger Sizes, Cabin Space

As the heights, weights, and overall dimensions of travelers change over time, it is imperative that the airline industry is evolving with passengers to ensure that all people are accommodated. This is a strategic process, however, as the safety of an aircraft depends heavily on the balance and distribution of its weight load.

According to Travel Noire, two U.S. senators brought up the issue of airline cabins’ smaller spaces and are asking that updated cabin evacuation tests be taken. The senators believe that the Federal Aviation Administration ( FAA) has disregarded the “reality of flying in America today.” They also assert that safety tests that were conducted back in 2019 are no longer an accurate indication of current circumstances in 2023.

Cramped flight conditions, exemplified through decreased legroom and narrow seat widths, were highlighted by the senators. They argue that these conditions pose risks during potential emergencies.

Despite what appears to be slower action of the airline industry as a whole, Air New Zealand is an airline taking a step to work through the issue. The airline recently started an optional weight survey on May 29, which will conclude July 2. The airline plans to ask at least 10,000 passengers to be weighed; all information will remain confidential and anonymous.

Travel Noire notes that South Korea-based airline, Asiana Airlines, is also working to address concerns surrounding safety. After an incident where a passenger seemed to attempt to open an emergency exit door during a flight, the airline has stopped selling seats near these exits on Airbus A321s.
