Delta Plane’s Windshield Shatters Mid-Air, Forcing Flight to Get Diverted On Way to DC

Passengers on a Delta flight expected a non-stop trip to Washington, D.C., before the plane’s windshield shattered mid-air and forced a diversion off-course.

The flight left from Salt Lake City on Thursday, March 31, and had to unexpectedly land in Denver, FOX 13 reported.

“It was announced that we would need to make an unplanned landing in Denver because the windscreen cracked,” passenger Kirk Knowlton wrote on Twitter while also sharing a photo of the damaged windshield.

“Apparently it was spontaneous.”

Another passenger among the 198 people on the plane said the crew announced the windshield broke approximately 90 minutes after the flight departed. Rachel Wright told KUTV she thought she initially “misheard” them.

“They kept coming on saying for everyone to stay calm, to be calm, and we were calm so being told to stay calm while we were calm made us feel a little panicky,” Wright told the outlet.

Knowlton wrote on Twitter that the plane “landed safely” in Denver.

A Delta spokesperson told McClatchy News the flight “experienced a maintenance issue mid-flight” in a statement.

“Out of an abundance of caution, the flight crew diverted into Denver and the plane landed routinely. Our team worked quickly to accommodate customers on a new plane, and we sincerely apologize for the delay and inconvenience to their travel plans.”
