Nantucket’s 12th Annual Aviation Camp Takes Flight Under Sponsorship of the Nantucket Flying Association
The Nantucket Flying Association, Inc., a non-profit committed to being the “Voice of General Aviation” on Nantucket, announces their 12th annual youth aviation camp, "The Sky's the Limit." This unique experience takes off from its base at the Nantucket Inn, adjacent to the Airport, on Monday, June 24th and runs through Friday, June 28th, from 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., with early dismissal on Friday after final awards and program. The ideal age for participation in camp is 8 - 16 with activities being planned that add up to an exciting week of adventures for both new and returning campers.
This year, NFA has been awarded several grants to fund camp scholarships. They will be awarded to year-round residents only, making aviation camp a possibility for all Nantucketers.
Activities at camp will include building and launching rockets, visits to various airport properties including the terminal and tower, hangars, the fire and rescue building as well as learning how and why aircraft fly and welcoming guest speakers. Campers will participate in an airport scavenger hunt, in an aviation art project that will be displayed in the Airport’s youth gallery, in learning about the history of flight, including on Nantucket, in viewing aviation films and in studying early space exploration and most recent space accomplishments. For campers, the highlight of the week will be “taking off into the sky,” with Certified Flight Instructors (CFI’s) from Stick ‘n Rudder at Chatham Airport; campers will fly a round-trip to Martha’s Vineyard and enter their time in their log books.
Tuition for the one-week camp is $550 which includes flying lessons, drinks, camp tee-shirt and all camp materials. Financial aid for year-round residents, which can offset a portion of the cost, is available. For detailed information, view Nantucket Flying Association’s Facebook page; please send a message on FB asking for application and scholarship forms. Also, for the applications, please contact the Aviation Camp Director, Betsey Sanpere, at 508-221-2429 or by email: [email protected]. NFA looks forward to a great program for all interested young people.
