Small Plane en Route From Fredericksburg to Georgetown Crashes Into Empty Home
Jul. 24—A small plane that took off from Fredericksburg with three people on board crashed into a vacant home in Georgetown on Sunday. All three passengers survived the crash, according to local officials.
The Federal Aviation Administration said the plane was a single-engine Beechcraft BE35, and it crashed shortly before noon. A preliminary report from the agency said the plane "experienced engine issues."
According to FlightAware.com, which uses data from the FAA, the plane took off from the Gillespie County Airport in Fredericksburg shortly before 11:30 a.m., and was heading for the Georgetown Executive Airport. Georgetown is in Williamson County, north of Austin.
The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board will investigate the crash, the FAA said.
The plane had flown from Georgetown to Fredericksburg earlier Sunday morning, arriving in Gillespie County just before 10 a.m., according to FlightAware.
The three people on board the plane were taken to a local hospital, according to the Georgetown Fire Department, which responded to the crash. They sustained minor injuries, according to the FAA report.
The two-story home on North Wood Drive was empty, the fire department said. The street is less than 2 miles from the Georgetown Executive Airport.
Gillespie County Airport manager Tony Lombardi said he was told the group flew in for a quick meal, "probably at the diner," then departed.
The diner is part of the Hangar Hotel and conference center complex at the airport. It's not uncommon for pilots to fly in for a short visit to eat at the 1950s-style diner, Lombardi said.
