MEDINA COUNTY, Ohio — A plane pilot died after he crashed into a runway at Wadsworth Municipal Airport Saturday evening, according to State Highway Patrol.

Robert D. Taylor, 64, of Medina died in the incident that happened about 6:45 p.m. at the airport near Rittman Road, Highway Patrol Sgt. Ryan E. Purpura said in a news release.

Investigators learned the plane was leaving one of the runways when the crash happened, Purpura said. The nose of the plane struck the runway, causing it to flip on its top and catch fire, he said.

Authorities did not say what caused the crash.

The airport is closed at this time, he said.

This is the second plane to crash near the airport this month.

Peter Klapp, 74, of Canton died when the plane he was operating crashed into a nearby pond Sept. 3.
