FAA Investigating Plane Crash at Cheboygan Airport
Jul. 5—CHEBOYGAN — Around 12:20 p.m. on Wednesday, June 30, troopers from the Michigan State Police Gaylord Post were called to a crash of a privately owned airplane at the Cheboygan County Airport, west of Cheboygan.
When the troopers arrived on scene off East Levering Road, they began their investigation and found that the pilot had been approaching the airport from the west and was attempting to make a landing on the airport's runway.
"The pilot did not deploy his landing gear and the aircraft skidded approximately 150 yards on the runway," said Lt. Derrick Carroll, public information officer of the Michigan State Police Seventh District Headquarters.
The pilot — who was identified as a 66-year-old man from Pointe Aux Pins — was not injured. He was the only person in the aircraft at the time of the crash. No one else was injured in the crash.
A report of the accident and photos of the incident have been submitted to the Federal Aviation Administration to be further reviewed. The FAA will complete its own investigation into the crash.
