2020 Stearman Fly-In Canceled

July 9, 2020

GALESBURG — A Labor Day weekend tradition with nearly 50 years of history will be choosing not to take flight this year. The 49th annual Stearman Fly-In has been canceled.

The event was to be held Sept. 7-12 at the Galesburg Municipal Airport, and had initially appeared to be ready to go on in the fall, even as the coronavirus pandemic began.

On May 18, the Fly-In opened online registration for pilots, suggesting that organizers had not felt the need at the time to cancel the event.

The event, dedicated to the iconic and classic Stearman biplane, annually brings fly-overs, aerobatics, seminars, activities and food to the airport.

Starting as a one-time gathering of 27 biplanes in September 1972, the Galesburg event now typically features the largest gathering of Stearman in the world.

The news of the cancellation came to The Register-Mail through Stearman Fly-In board director Robert Harrison. Board president Jeanne Conlon has been contacted for additional information on the cancellation and why it has come to pass.
