Warbirds over Whiteside lineup grows

June 27--ROCK FALLS -- Organizers are adding more aircraft to the lineup for Warbirds over Whiteside, to be held July 20-22 at the Whiteside County Airport.

Among the planes scheduled to appear so far are a C-130 transport plane; a B-25 fighter from St. Louis; three Mustang P-51s from the Rockford area; a vintage F-86 Korean fighter and four L-39 single-engine jet aircraft. There also will be many experimental aircraft on hand.

B-52 rides will be available for $395 a person.

The C-130 and B-25 will be leaving Saturday night, so those who want to see those planes need to come on Day 1, said Gary Schopp, who is organizing the event with airport manager Mike Dowell.

Aircraft will be available for viewing from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday.

Hangar parties, usually reserved for the pilots and other invited guests, are planned Friday and Saturday nights, but will be open for a fee to those who want to hear the speakers.

Those who pay $100 will get a commemorative hat, access to the ramp as aircraft arrive Friday evening, and admission to that night's hangar party, from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. For $10 more, a guest also can attend.

Lauran Paine Jr., a columnist for Sport Aviation magazine and a Vietnam-era pilot, is the speaker.

For $125, you can attend both hangar parties. Herb Wood, 92, who flew Hellcats off the USS Yorktown during World War II, will speak at Saturday's party, which will be held from 6:30 to 10 p.m.

Otherwise, general admission will be $10 per vehicle, or $5 per person. At least six food vendors will be on hand, and aviation memorabilia will be sold.

Profits from Warbirds over Whiteside will help pay for the event.

Organizers are hoping for a big turnout, Schopp said.

"It's a very inexpensive, fun, entertaining, educational day."
