Spartanburg, S.C. – May 23, 2013 – During the 53rd Annual Meeting of the Upstate Employers Network, Jack McBride, CEO of Contec Inc. was named 2013 recipient of the Alan R. Willis Society of Service Award.

The Willis Award recognizes individuals whose unselfish community service and leadership make a difference. Past recipients of the Willis Award make the selection each year.

Since beginning Contec 1988, McBride has continually reinvested both professionally and personally in Spartanburg County and shares his time, talents and supports charitable giving. Contec employs over 500 people globally, and has facilities in Spartanburg; Suzhou, China; Toledo, Ohio; and Vannes, France. The company, as well as Contec employees, are heavily involved in community activities, from Mobile Meals, The Cancer Association of Spartanburg & Cherokee Counties, Boys and Girls Clubs of the Upstate and globalbike, to many other upstate organizations.

“The concepts of sharing and giving back are part of the culture at Contec, and Mr. McBride leads by example,” says Melissa Sullivan, Marketing and Communications Director for Contec. “He is personally involved in educational initiatives and non-profit organizations here in Spartanburg. He is extremely supportive of our employees and their individual community service interests, varied as they are.”

McBride serves on the advisory board for Wells Fargo Bank of SC, the Investment Advisory Committee for the Spartanburg County Foundation and on the Board of Trustees for the Mary Black Foundation. He supports the Spartanburg Area Chamber of Commerce and works with the business and entrepreneurial development efforts at the Spartanburg Community College’s Tyger River Center for Business and Entrepreneurial Development. McBride is also involved with the Iron Yard Digital Health Accelerator project here in Spartanburg.

McBride says of his work with the Mary Black Foundation, “I’ve had the opportunity to participate in mission-driven efforts aimed at increasing community engagement in early childhood development, as well as active and healthy living. It’s been rewarding.”

The Willis Award has been presented each year since 1995. It is named in honor of Al Willis, who served as executive director of Spartanburg Development Association for nearly 25 years. In April 2012, the Association changed its name to Upstate Employers Network, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to helping upstate workplaces of all types and sizes improve through information, training and involvement.
