Single-engine Piper 28 went down Tuesday morning about 50 miles southeast of Sioux Falls, SD.

DES MOINES, IA -- Authorities say three people died when a small plane crashed into a northwest Iowa road embankment.

The Federal Aviation Administration says the single-engine Piper 28 went down Tuesday morning about 50 miles southeast of Sioux Falls, S.D.

The crash was about five miles from a local airport but no flight plan was filed so the plane's destination was unclear.

Three people on board were pronounced dead at the scene. Sheriff's officials withheld names while family members were being notified.

The FAA says the plane is owned by Jerome Goodger of Milton, Wis. A person answering the telephone a number listed for Goodger said he was home but not available. A message wasn't immediately returned.

The National Weather Service says storms were in the area at the time of the crash.
