Bristol Airport appoints structural firm; £150 million development
MULTI-million-pound expansion plans for Bristol Airport have taken another step closer to reality.
Bristol-based firm Hydrock has been appointed as civil and structural designer for the new terminal extension at the airport.
The work will be the first stage of a planned £150 million development over the next ten years which will include a second terminal extension, a new east terminal pier and walkway, hotel and multi-storey car park. The work will mean the airport will have the capacity to handle 10 million passengers a year.
The Hydrock team will be working on the initial design work and hope to come up with the first plans this summer. The west terminal extension will be a three-storey structure, including a basement.
Project director Jerry King said: "Bristol Airport is a significant gateway to Bristol and the South West and we are delighted to be involved."
Hydrock is working as part of the design team which includes architects McAlister Armstrong & Partners Ltd, building consultants Hulley and Kirkwood and quantity surveyors Ward Williams.
Plans to expand the airport were passed in 2010 despite protests from environmentalists and residents of nearby villages concerned about increased pollution and noise.
The operators say the expanded airport would create a further 3,000 jobs and add £200 million a year to the area's economy.
