Mar. 27 — Snodgrass & Sons Construction has begun work on a new cargo building at Wichita Mid-Continent Airport.

The building will replace the existing cargo building that will be demolished next year to make way for a new terminal.

"It's the first of the dominoes," said airport director Victor White.

The 48,000-square-foot cargo building is scheduled for completion in early February. It will cost about $6 million and will be funded from airport revenue.

The building is used by air cargo companies for storage of goods in transit and for offices.

The building will be subdivided into nine sections for tenants. The anchor tenant will be UPS, White said.

US Customs and Border Protection will move to a temporary site on the far side of the airport.

The new cargo building can be expanded at a later date, if need be.

Other pieces of the preliminary work for the terminal include a new aircraft parking area and ramp. That work will begin this summer and take several years. Moving the utilities will start later this year.
