Aviation Advantage, a firm that had intended this spring to bring back regularly scheduled flights for Florida gamblers, has delayed the charter service until October because of rising fuel costs.

Gulfport-Biloxi International Airport has been without a regularly scheduled charter service to Florida since September, when Southeast Vacations shut down operations after Florida was hit by a series of hurricanes.

The airport, the Harrison County Tourism Commission and the Gulf Coast Gaming Association had each pledged $75,000 to finance a marketing campaign for the service. Tuesday, the Tourism Commission rescinded its share because of the delay.

Aviation Advantage now plans to begin flights from airports near Orlando and Fort Lauderdale to the Mississippi Coast beginning Oct. 13. Airlines already provide regular service to the Orlando and Tampa markets. And some casinos sponsor charter flights, but not on a regularly scheduled basis.

Commission members said they will reconsider contributing to a marketing campaign for Aviation Advantage when it goes forward with its service, but the firm will have to resubmit its request.
