ARLINGTON -- The city of Arlington will receive $2.5 million in federal funding for precision instrument flight technology that will allow aircraft to land safely in inclement weather at Arlington Municipal Airport.
Funding for the Instrument Landing System is made possible by the Facilities and Equipment Division of the Federal Aviation Administration.
A check presentation is scheduled at 3 p.m. today at the Arlington Municipal Airport Administration, 5000 S. Collins St. The program will include Arlington Mayor Robert Cluck, Mayor Pro Tem Ron Wright, Arlington City Council members, U.S. Rep. Joe Barton, City Manager Jim Holgersson, Airport Manager Bob Porter and officials from the Public Works Department.
Securing the $2.5 million in federal dollars for the ILS was a team effort that evolved over a 15-year period.
The design phase of the ILS is scheduled for this fall with construction expected to begin in spring 2007. The system is planned to be fully operational by November 2007. The new air traffic control tower becomes operational in December.
