US Bureau of Transportation statistics show that, so far this year, 19 out of 20 flights leave the gate within 15 minutes of the schedule at Honolulu International Airport, Hawaii.

The bureau counts a flight as delayed if it leaves the gate more than 15 minutes later than scheduled, Pacific Business News reported. According to the statistics, on-time departure for the first seven months of the year never got to 90% at Honolulu between 1998 and 2001. On the other hand, the on-time performance has never been below 90% since 2002 and the record has been steadily improving. Although the number of delayed flights has increased, there has been a faster increase in the total number of flights.

For Hawaii airports, the number of late flights and the percentage they make up of the total number of flights is as follows: Honolulu: 1,281 (5.8%); Kahului: 681 (7.8%); Keahole, Kona: 240 (5.9%); Lihue: 126 (2.9%); Hilo: 34 (2.2%); Lanai: 3 (1.4%) and Hoolehua, Molokai: 2 (0.9%).
