Zayead Hajaig triggered the U.S. alert when he reportedly tried upgrading his pilot rating to fly commercial planes despite lacking the necessary qualifications.

A student pilot who sparked a U.S. terrorist alert was sentenced to a year in jail Friday for obtaining a fake passport.

Zayead Hajaig, 35, earlier had pleaded guilty to the charge.

Hajaig, a Nigerian-born British national who studied in Atlanta, Georgia, triggered the U.S. alert when he reportedly tried upgrading his pilot rating to fly commercial planes despite lacking the necessary qualifications.

Hajaig took flying lessons at Gwinnett County Airport-Briscoe Field, the facility also used by two of the Sept. 11 hijackers, Mohamed Atta and Marwan al-Shehhi.

A U.S. grand jury has indicted Hajaig on charges of being an alien in illegal possession of firearms.

Hajaig admitted dishonestly obtaining a British passport in the name of Barry Felton, a former co-worker, between Jan. 29 and Feb. 6, 1997.
