Immigration officers had placed Yong Zhu, 26, on the Boeing 747 and were waiting for it to taxi to the runway when he opened an emergency exit door and jumped.

A man being deported to China leaped from a parked jet Tuesday in an apparent effort to stay in the United States, authorities said. He was quickly recaptured.

The incident occurred while Northwest Airlines Flight 11 to Tokyo and Beijing was parked at Detroit Metropolitan Airport, said Greg Palmore, spokesman for Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Immigration officers had placed Yong Zhu, 26, on the Boeing 747 and were waiting for it to taxi to the runway when he opened an emergency exit door and jumped, Palmore said. The officers, standing nearby, saw him drop to the tarmac and took him back into custody.

Zhu was injured and taken to a hospital, Palmore said. He was being deported for immigration violations.
