New San Diego Estimate: $17 Billion to Build Airport

San Diego County Regional Airport Authority has heard that to build a new airport to replace the city's existing one would cost some $17 billion. This figure, presented by consultants Ricondo & Associates, covers an airport built at either Campo in southeast San Diego County, or on land in Imperial County, with a high-speed rail link and improved highway infrastructure.

The actual cost of construction is put at $6.4 billion for Campo and $4.1 billion for Imperial Infrastructure accounts for the remainder--$10.2 billion for Campo and $13.2 billion for Imperial.

The airport authority is evaluating several new sites to serve thecity having said it needs a future airport of 3,000 acres (1,214ha) with parallel runways to meet a forecast 30-35 million passenger by 2030. It is currently bound by state legislature to present an airportreplacement plan by the end of this year.
