Londonderry, N.H., councilmen on Tuesday night approved a measure that puts the town's police department one step closer to taking over law enforcement duties at Manchester-Boston Regional Airport.
Under the terms of the agreement, the airport will pay the town about $2.5 million a year, including roughly $150,000 in administrative fees, according to Town Manager Dave Caron.
The measure, which passed unanimously with little debate, now allows Caron to now sign the agreement on behalf of the town. After that, airport officials are expected to sign.
The three-year contract, which includes an optional two-year extension, will take effect July 1 when finalized.
The department's new airport division would include 19 more patrol officers, five sergeants and one captain.
Transfer of law enforcement duties to Londonderry also ends a relationship between the airport and the Rockingham County Sheriff's Department, which held the role for more than 12 years.
The town has encouraged Rockingham deputies to apply for jobs, but has insisted that they will have to undergo the normal application process.
