Revived L.A. Group To Steer More Air Traffic To Ontario

Ontario airport, which also is owned by the city of Los Angeles, would be used to divert increasing air traffic away from LAX.

A defunct regional aviation group that sought to steer travelers to Ontario International Airport is coming back to life at the behest of Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa.

The mayor said recently that he plans to resurrect the Southern California Regional Airport Authority as part of an effort to divert increasing air traffic away from congested Los Angeles International Airport. Ontario airport, which also is owned by the city of Los Angeles, would be one of the airports that could handle some of that air traffic.

The airport authority has existed in some form for more than 20 years. The last version dissolved about three years ago after some agencies, including Los Angeles, stopped participating in meetings. Riverside and San Bernardino counties have been part of the group in the past, and should be receiving invitations to join the group again, according to Villaraigosa's office.
