The instrument landing system at Los Angeles International Airport failed Monday, cutting in half the number of landings, a spokesman for the air traffic controller's union said.
The system, which helps pilots in the air line up with runways, failed just before 10 a.m., said Tony Vella, local president for the National Air Traffic Controllers Association.
The equipment's failure forced air traffic controllers to guide airplanes into LAX on one runway, cutting landings per hour to about 28 instead of 60, he said.
"We don't have any information. We're trying to gather it right now," said Allen Kenitzer, FAA spokesman.
