Air traffic by commercial airlines has not been affected by the failure of the European Union and the United States to reach a new agreement on passenger data transfer.

Airlines have however urged negotiators to reach a new agreement as the previous one expired over the weekend (30 September - 1 October).

According to the EU justice commissioner Franco Frattini, there is some hope a new agreement could be signed with US Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff on 6 October if a mandate from EU justice ministers is given that day.

Frattini also said that a new agreement is very close and "only a few issues remain to be solved", Reuters reported.
