The world's largest passenger aircraft touched down Tuesday at O'Hare International Airport, a day after completing its inaugural flight to the United States with a landing at New York's Kennedy International Airport.
"I think it's the most incredible thing I've ever seen in my life," said Charlie Gilliam, who was among the hundreds of people who crowded around the jet after it landed. "This is history. This is like seeing Howard Hughes take off in the Spruce Goose."
City officials used the landing of the 239-foot (72.8-meter)-long Airbus A380 as an opportunity to call attention to the need for a massive modernization project that includes plans for a longer runway.
Lufthansa is planning to use the jet for regular commercial flights into O'Hare in 2009.
