Pittsburgh International Airport could see fewer daily US Airways flights if this market does not make more money for the airline, CEO Doug Parker said this morning.
"We still struggle to make a profit here," Parker said, during the dedication of a plane painted with a Pittsburgh Steelers theme.
"It rarely makes sense to add flights in an unprofitable market," he said.
Currently, US Airways operates 111 main line and regional flights a day from Pittsburgh. That compares with 144 daily flights in January.
The carrier also announced this morning it would hire 350 pilots over the next 12 to 16 months, mostly to fill the ranks of pilots who are retiring. It's not yet clear where the pilots will be based, but they would primarily fly Embraer regional jets.
Separately, US Airways plans to break ground on a new flight operations control center on Sept. 20 near the airport. It will employ about 600 people -- 450 from the current center in Findlay, plus about 150 who will relocate here from Phoenix.
