Four Suffolk airports will share more than $2.5 million in state funding for various projects, Gov. Eliot Spitzer announced yesterday, part of $43 million in transportation infrastructure improvements statewide.
The funding comes from the Renew and Rebuild New York Transportation Bond Act of 2005, part of the state Department of Transportation's 5-year, $17.9-billion capital program to fund improvements statewide through 2010.
A $27-million allotment for rail and port projects does not include Long Island. Another $16.6 million for aviation projects will benefit four airports in Suffolk, including:
$1 million for a perimeter security road and 6-foot barbed wire fence at Brookhaven Airport.
$750,000 for a substation of the Suffolk County Police Aviation Unit and a portion of their hangar at Gabreski Airport in Westhampton. Another $180,000 will pay for an earthen barrier there.
$315,000 for rehabilitation work on the perimeter road at Republic Airport in East Farmingdale.
$300,000 for a closed circuit television system at Long Island-MacArthur Airport in Ronkonkoma.
