Construction begins on airport parking ramp

Oct. 5, 2007

Oct. 4--Construction has begun on a three-level, 500,000-square-foot parking ramp at the Dane County Regional Airport that will add 1,240 spaces.

The $30 million project, expected to be completed late next year, also includes a 2,000-square-foot exit plaza with six gates and a parking administration building. Airport revenues, mostly parking fees, will pay for construction and no property tax revenue will be used.

The airport will seek Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification for the administration building from the U.S. Green Building Council. The building will have efficient plumbing fixtures and will use recycled materials, as well as materials with few or no volatile organic compounds.

"We think it's a community value," airport spokeswoman Sharyn Wisniewski said of the LEED certification. "We're happy to be a role model for environmentally responsive building."

The new ramp will be adjacent to and west of the existing 1,600-space ramp.

Wisniewski said the airport's economy lot on International Lane will be used during construction and shuttle-bus service will be provided during peak times. She said travelers should plan to get to the airport 15 minutes earlier during ramp construction.

She said a few surface parking spaces near the existing ramp will be lost during construction.

Earlier this year, International Lane was moved away from the existing ramp to allow space for the new building.

The project's general contractor is J.H. Findorff & Sons and the architect is Eppstein Uhen Architects. Landscaping will be provided by Ken Saike Landscaping and Graef, Anhalt, Schloemer & Associates is a project consultant. All four firms have Madison offices.
