New aviation college planned

MONTGOMERY - Two-year college chancellor Bradley Byrne said Thursday he and his staff are developing plans to create a new college that will specialize in aviation training.
Byrne told members of the state school board that plans are in the initial stages and include de-merging Enterprise-Ozark Community College in Enterprise.
The new school will be called the Alabama Aviation College, with a main campus in Ozark and a branch in Mobile.
Byrne said he will provide the board with more details and an outline for the plan at their November work session. He acknowledged that a de-merger was a departure for the board, which has always moved to combine campuses in the past.
"This is not something that I'm going to recommend to you lightly, because this is such an important training area for this state," he said. "After looking at it I've come to the conclusion that we need to de-couple these two colleges and get an aviation college with a statewide mission."
