Aviation Design Combines with Green Philosophy

December 17, 2007 (ORLANDO, Florida) – The new Executive Terminal at Boston Logan International Airport (BLI) is at the forefront in green aviation design. Designed by SchenkelShultz Architecture in Orlando, in association with Chan Krieger Sieniewicz of Boston, the 22,000-square-foot facility has been submitted for LEED® Certification from the U.S. Green Building Council, and is anticipated to be the world’s first LEED® Certified fixed-base operation (FBO).

LEED®, or Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, has become the nationally recognized standard for the development of high-performance green buildings. The designation is a seal of approval for structures that are designed and built in an environmentally responsible fashion to be profitable and healthy places to live and work.

Other industries have adopted greenbuilding principles and now airports and flight support operations throughout the country are eager to learn how to implement a green philosophy into new facilities in the field of aviation.

In designing the Executive Terminal at BLI to be healthy for the environment and for travelers, SchenkelShultz relied on its expertise in aviation and its commitment to designing all of its projects using green design principles. “Greenbuilding has become an essential element of the design process for every project SchenkelShultz is involved with,” says J. Thomas Chandler, AIA, President & COO of SchenkelShultz Architecture. “Our philosophy dictates that we strive to design every project to be as sustainable as possible. We see it as the right thing to do.”

The Executive Terminal at BLI has been a success and people are taking notice. The project was presented with the Award of Merit in 2007 from the New England Chapter of the American Institute of Architects. More importantly, the greenbuilding philosophy embodied in the project is catching on with aviation industry leaders.

As the world’s leading FBO, Signature Flight Support has committed itself to greenbuilding and energy reduction efforts. SchenkelShultz will again apply its green philosophy to designs for new and existing Signature facilities at its campus at the San Francisco International Airport.
