May 21--The sky above Chino was the venue for a grand spectacle as dozens of historic and modern aircraft roared above last Saturday to the delight of thousands.

The annual County of San Bernardino Planes of Fame Air Show was held on Saturday and Sunday at Chino Airport.

From World War II fighters and Korean War jets to the American warplanes streaking over Afghanistan today, the event was a way for young and old alike to feed their passion for manned flight.

Among them was aviation buff Dave Chindlund of Ontario.

"I think this demonstrates the fire you can ignite in a child's mind through this experience," said Chindlund, a fourth-grade teacher at El Rancho Elementary School in Chino.

"It's an honor to be here to celebrate everything that's made us a free country," he added.

Tracy Gossett brought his son Demetre Gossett, 8, to enjoy the show.

"I brought the kids to let them see something they probably have never seen before, especially up close," Gossett said.

Demetre said he liked how the planes "flew up in the air and the smoke was all over the place."

Lance McGee is an instructor for DuBois Aviation, which had its training plane, a Piper Cherokee 140, out for children to experience what it's like to sit behind the controls.

McGee explained the appeal of flight.

"Basically it's the most free feeling you'll ever have," he said.

The show featured performances by military

aircraft, such as the hulking C-17 transport plane and the A-10 warthog fighter. Pilots also performed a variety of acrobatic moves in planes like the Tigercat and World War II fighters.
