Teams Practice Emergency Drills At Smith Reynolds Airport

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. --

Multiple agencies across Forsyth County descended upon Smith Reynolds Airport for an emergency drill on Thursday.

The teams simulated what would happen if a plane collision were to happen on the tarmac, complete with an explosion and casualties.

It was all staged so crews could better understand how to respond to an aircraft emergency.

"We're testing our response (and) our communications, because there are at least 15 to 20 different agencies that have to respond to this incident in a safe manner," said August Vernon, of Forsyth County Emergency Management.

Commercial airports are required to practice their response to a plane crash or a similar disaster every three years.
