Research From Targa Telematics Reveals a Consistent Increase in Worldwide Airport Activity

Sept. 13, 2022
In the first eight months of 2022, the utilization rate of ground support vehicles both worldwide and at European level has increased to reach 81% of pre-pandemic levels, peaking in the months of April, May and June.

Targa Telematics, a technology company specialising in IoT solutions for connected mobility, has confirmed the findings based on analysis of hourly usage data received from airside ground support vehicles.

The company manages a total of more than 2  million connected and distributed assets, including vehicles operating within airports across the world. Targa’s ground handling technology enables the digitalization of airport processes, allowing key airport stakeholders to monitor and reduce operational costs, increase safety and security of people and assets, use vehicles in compliance with the airport regulations, and ensure efficient ground handling activity.

Analyzing the average monthly hours of activity of each vehicle, the company concluded that the level of activity in airports in the first eight months of 2022 is at 81% of the levels observed during the same period in 2019.

The data supports a very positive trend line back to historic levels of activity, with worldwide peaks reached in the months of April, May, and June of 92%, 95%, and 91% respectively of those seen in 2019.

Nicola de Mattia, CEO at Targa Telematics, commented: “We are delighted to report that airport activity, both in Europe and globally, is slowly starting to recover from the effects of the pandemic, the consequences of which severely impacted the whole transportation industry. As a leading international telematics provider, our technology has proven successful at improving the efficiency of airport services and, in turn, helping operators to manage this increase in activity.”

Targa Telematics provides its services in many of the airports with a strong footprint in Europe, counting 20+ locations including Gatwick, Heathrow, Bristol, Edinburgh, Oslo, Copenhagen, Helsinki, Paris, Amsterdam, Dusseldorf, Valencia, and Milan. The company is also present worldwide, collaborating with airports in Abu Dhabi, Singapore, Sydney, Auckland, and Boston, amongst many others.

The company will be taking part at GSE Expo Europe in Paris on Sept. 13, 14, and 15thth in the Innovation zone area and will be hosting three roundtables: covering fleet optimization, telematics for electric GSE, and GSE pooling for airports.
