Spirit Adds 2 Non-Stop Flight Destinations From Charlotte

A discount airline is adding two more destinations out of Charlotte next year.

Spirit Airlines will begin daily, non-stop flights to Dallas-Fort Worth and Nashville, Tennessee, from Charlotte Douglas International Airport on April 12, spokesman Tommy Fletcher told The Charlotte Observer Wednesday.

Pricing depends on route and time of year, he said.

It’s the latest addition for the Florida-based airline. Spirit started two direct flights this month: to LaGuardia Airport in New York City and Miami International Airport, the Observer previously reported.

But just as Spirit adds routes in Charlotte, it’s also cutting 35 routes in January, mostly out of Florida, according to industry publication Airline Weekly. Spirit did not immediately say if any Charlotte routes were impacted.

The cuts are blamed on supply chain issues and air traffic control constraints the airline industry is facing, according to the industry publication. Spirit has cut 40% of its scheduled flights between Florida and the rest of the U.S.

Spirit began service at CLT in 2019 with direct flights to Fort Lauderdale and Orlando in Florida, Newark, New Jersey, and Baltimore/Washington.

Last month, Spirit shareholders approved plans to sell the airlines to JetBlue in a nearly $4-billion deal. The plan still faces regulatory hurdles.

Charlotte Douglas was one of the busiest airports in the world last year, ranked the fifth busiest airport for arrivals and departures, according to Airports Council International 2021 preliminary rankings.
