United Airlines Plane Leaks 240 Gallons of Jet Fuel on Newark Airport Taxiway

A malfunction aboard the plane reportedly caused the leak.

Nearly 100 already-delayed United Airlines passengers set to leave for Las Vegas on Monday were held up for a couple more hours after 240 gallons of fuel from a plane leaked onto a taxiway at Newark Liberty International Airport.

The Port Authority Police Department’s Aircraft Rescue Fire Fighter arrived shortly after the fuel leaked as flight 1596 was taxing for departure around 5:30 p.m, the PAPD’s union said in a statement.

A malfunction aboard the plane caused the leak, the union said.

The 98 passengers were able to board a replacement plane later There were also five crew members aboard. No one was injured.

Flight 1596, which was scheduled to depart for Las Vegas at 3:25 p.m. instead left at 7:57 p.m. It landed at McCarran International Airport at 11:30 p.m. Pacific Daylight Time (2:30 a.m. Tuesday EDT), according to United’s website.

United didn’t immediately return a message from NJ Advance Media seeking additional information.
