Union Voices Concerns of Inadequate Training

July 17, 2017
The union representing ground handling employees at Tornto Pearson believes temporary workers hired for the summer are receiving inadequate training compared to senior workers.

The union, representing nearly to 700 ground handling employees at Toronto's Pearson Airport, is concerned that inadequate training of temporary workers has created a safety risk.

According to a Global News report, Teamsters 419 vice-president Harjinder Badial sent a letter to union members saying, “temporary agency workers remain a serious health and safety risk to our members.”

The report explains Badial is referring to a recent move by ground handling company Swissport to hire agency workers to handle below the wing operations including loading baggage, cleaning cabins and pre-flight wing balancing. The union believes these workers are receiving inadequate training compared to senior workers who initially got three to four weeks of basic training.
