The Service Employees International Union (SEIU), which represents thousands of baggage handlers and other ground support personnel at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), opted to extend contract negotiations Monday rather than follow through with a work stoppage.

According to a report from Southern California Public Radio (SCPR), SEIU is attempting to negotiate higher wages for its members. The report stated American and United Airlines both are taking steps to ensure smooth operations in the event of a strike.

SEIU had said last week that a strike could come as early as Monday, according to the report.
