The Fly Green Fund, LLM Aviation and Euroairlines Team Up for Sustainable Aviation

LLM Aviation, Euroairlines and the Fly Green Fund have signed an agreement strengthening the collaboration between the parties in their mutual goal − sustainable aviation.

In order to stop global warming, emissions from all sectors, aviation included, must be reduced. That is why LLM Aviation, Euroairlines and the Fly Green Fund have signed an agreement strengthening the collaboration between the parties in their mutual goal − sustainable aviation.

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a drastic impact on flying as lockdowns around the world virtually brought all air travel to a halt. As the world slowly opens up air travel is picking up once again, and at the same time the demand for a more sustainable way of flying is growing. An effective way to reduce emissions from aviation is to stop using fossil fuels and instead fly on Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF). Compared to fossil jet fuel, the SAF of today can reduce the CO2-emission by as much as 80%. But even though today's airplanes are ready to be powered by SAF only a very small portion of the fuel used is sustainable.

“We are currently in a catch 22-situation. The price of SAF is around four times more expensive than regular jet fuel. Thus, demand and supply continue to be low. Even though we expect supply to increase in the coming years more can be done to raise awareness and build up the SAF-market to accelerate supply even more. As availability increases prices will drop further increasing demand and supply,” says David Hild, managing director of Fly Green Fund.

“The aviation industry is set to become a zero-emissions sector in the near future but we must jointly combine our efforts to overcome the challenges lying ahead of us. Pioneering in the Sustainable Aviation Fuels deployment is the first step towards zero-emission flights,” says Antonio López-Lázaro, managing director of Euroairlines and LLM Aviation.

By signing a letter of intent LLM Aviation, Euroairlines and the Fly Green Fund are teaming up in the fields of research and development, business modeling for SAF implementation, communication and facilitating the use of SAF.

“We are happy to be a part of this collaboration with LLM Aviation and Euroairlines. The aviation industry is global, so it is important to work across borders in order to increase the demand and use of sustainable aviation fuel,” says Hild.

“At LLM Aviation, we are proud to launch this tripartite partnership with the most ambitious sustainable targets in mind. An international and collaborative approach is the best way to efficiently achieve a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions,” affirms Darío Pérez Campuzano, head of sustainable research and development at LLM Aviation.

As it is not the planes themselves (nor the cars or trains) that cause the emissions, but the fuels that power them, it is important to make a fuel change. The Fly Green Fund has delivered SAF to Swedish Airports since 2016. It has been possible thanks to sustainable conscious individuals and partners who have paid the extra cost for SAF through the fund.

“Even if we already have delivered nearly 1,400 tonnes of SAF we need to increase the volumes both in Sweden and internationally. We are happy to share our knowledge and are at the same time eager to learn from LLM and Euroairlines. It is through collaboration that we will be able to speed up development globally,” Hild continues.
