The City of Tyler, Texas has named Stephen Thompson, A.A.E., as airport manager for Tyler Pounds Regional Airport (TYR). Thompson has operated at airports across the globe and most recently worked for the fifth busiest airport in the country. In his new position, Thompson will manage all airport-sponsored activities and responsibilities for TYR, as well as supervise airport administrative and operations staff. Thompson began his new position on March 2.
“I am very excited to lead the great team of professionals at TYR and to become an active member of this vibrant aviation community,” said Thompson. “Working closely with members of the community, I look forward to completing the master planning process that is in progress. Together we will chart a course that will further ensure our airport’s position as a key resource for all of East Texas.”
Thompson comes to Tyler from Denver International Airport, where he served as manager of airport safety and led a team providing support to airport operations, maintenance, construction, and airline affairs. Previously he worked for the National Center for Atmospheric Research as Research Pilot/Safety Officer. He has also served as director of safety for the Embry-Riddle Flight Training Program with the U.S. Air Force Academy and First Office for Frontier Airlines.
Thompson earned his bachelor’s degree in management from the U.S. Air Force Academy and a master’s degree in Management from Webster’s University. He is an Accredited Member (A.A.E.) of the American Association of Airport Executives. An accomplished pilot, Thompson served as an Air Force Aircraft Commander and Instructor Pilot on C-130 aircraft. He holds an FAA Airline Transport Pilot certificate with type ratings on the Gulfstream GV and Airbus A-320.
