MKE hosts event to educate girls about in-demand aviation careers.

Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport hosted more than 50 girls during Women in Aviation Southeastern Wisconsin’s Girls in Aviation Day October 5. The event was put on in partnership with Girl Scouts of Wisconsin Southeast.

Now in its fifth year as a global event, Girls in Aviation Day is designed to introduce and educate girls 8 to 17 years of age on the many career opportunities offered by the aviation and aerospace industries. “We want our local girls to see that there are exciting careers available to them as engineers, astronauts, pilots, dispatchers, air traffic controllers and dozens of other jobs within the aviation community,” said Joan Kelnhofer, president of Women in Aviation Southeastern Wisconsin.

The event at MKE is one of over 50 Girls in Aviation events around the country. “We are proud to work with Women in Aviation Southeastern Wisconsin and Girl Scouts of Wisconsin Southeast to help promote inclusion in the industry and inspire a future generation of aviation leaders that includes women,” said Pat Rowe, MKE’s director of Air Service Development. “We think it’s important to educate girls as they begin to think about their career options so we can ensure a strong future of women in the aviation industry.”

The event will engage girls with tours and Q&A sessions with aviation professionals, as well as with hands-on learning experiences such as the chance to pilot a flight simulator. “Girls in Aviation Day is a great partnership for Girl Scouts as it helps girls develop skills today for their success tomorrow,” said Girl Scouts of Wisconsin Southeast CEO Christy Brown.
