Get The ‘Hel’ Out of Town with Finnair’s New Nonstop Service from Lax to Helsinki

March 20, 2019
LAX becomes one of only five airports in the US to provide nonstop service to Finland’s southern capital.

Just in time for spring break, Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) today announced that Finnair, the ninth Oneworld alliance carrier to begin service at LAX, will launch a new nonstop flight, connecting Los Angeles travelers to Helsinki (HEL), Finland. The inaugural flight is scheduled for Sunday, March 31, and will include a gate celebration for passengers featuring LAWA and Finnair officials. With the launch of this new route, LAX will become one of only five airports in the U.S. providing nonstop flights to and from Helsinki. This is the first time LAX is providing this nonstop route. “We are excited welcome Finnair and their new nonstop service between Helsinki and LAX, a route that will allow Angelenos to experience Finland’s vibrant capital, visit the incredible countryside or travel to see the Northern Lights,” said Deborah Flint, Chief Executive Officer, LAWA. "This flight also opens a new gateway to Scandinavia, the Baltics and other surrounding regions, making it easier for our guests to travel the world and for visitors from abroad to experience all that Los Angeles has to offer.” "Finnair has been flying to the United States for nearly 50 years and we are very happy to expand our North American network with a new route from Helsinki to Los Angeles flying on our new A350 aircraft,” says Kati Kaivonen, Head of North America at Finnair. “The route serves both businesses and leisure travelers wishing to explore the Nordic and Europe by utilizing our network of over 100 destinations."

Finnair was the first European airline to fly the Airbus A350 XWB when it was launched into Finnair’s fleet in 2015. Finnair will fly this new year-round and nonstop route using its Airbus A350, a technologically advanced aircraft designed for long-distance flights. The flight times are expected to be 10 hours and 30 minutes to Helsinki Airport, and 11 hours on the return flight to LAX.

Flights will be scheduled for Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays as follows (all times local):

  • Depart LAX at 7:30 p.m., arrive HEL at 4:05 p.m.
  • Depart HEL at 4:40 p.m., arrive LAX at 5:40 p.m.

Thanks to Helsinki’s geographical location, Finnair’s new northern route to Los Angeles will offer convenient travel times for guests traveling from Scandinavia, the Baltics, Russia, northern Germany as well as the domestic routes in Finland. The new route will be operated within the Atlantic joint business between Finnair, American Airlines, British Airways and Iberia Airlines.
