The State of Alaska adopted a law prohibiting smoking in all workplaces effective Oct. 1. In order to comply with the new law, Fairbanks International Airport (FAI) has been designated a smokefree campus, and smoking is prohibited within the FAI passenger terminal campus. This prohibition includes all enclosed public spaces, taxis, buses, shuttles, sidewalks, rest areas, as well as public and employee parking lots.
There are two designated smoking areas on the FAI campus located across from the concourse adjacent to the FAI terminal building. Smoking is also prohibited in all State owned buildings on airport property. Signage is provided to aid the public, non-English speakers and unfamiliar travelers with the new policy. A letter will be provided to all tenants and permitted ground transportation providers. The permit office will have compliant vehicle signs available at no cost.
Airport Police and Fire will begin enforcing the new law and individuals who do not comply with the law are subject to a $50 fine. Public outreach will begin immediately through social media, terminal signage and media outreach. Terminal announcements will be recorded related to smoking and pre-set to play at regular intervals. Violations can be reported to the Airport Communications Center at 907-474-2530 and complaints may also be filed at smokefree.alaska.gov.
