Schenectady County Receives $2.1 Million for County Airport Upgrades
Sep. 13—GLENVILLE — A grant from the Federal Aviation Administration Airport Improvement Program will help cover the majority of upgrades to two taxiways and signs at the Schenectady County Airport.
U.S. Rep. Paul Tonko, D-Amsterdam, announced Monday that Schenectady County was awarded $2.1 million toward its airport project, which is projected to cost $2.3 million in total. The county and state will each cover $116,680 of the costs.
"The project includes the rehabilitation of Taxiway D and the northern half of Taxiway A, which have not had any major rehabilitation in approximately 20 years," said Erin Laiacona, the county's director of public communications.
Schenectady County Legislature Chairman Anthony Jasenski said the project will increase the safety of the runways, which see 40,000 flights a year.
"Taxiway A is the main taxiway general aviation aircraft use to access the primary runway, and Taxiway D provides ramp access to the Empire State Aerosciences Museum and to SUNY Schenectady's current aircraft storage area for their Aviation Science program, which allows students to gain flight training experience that can be used towards earning a pilots license right here in our backyard," Jasenski said.
The project will replace the current surface and put in new pavement marking. The medium-intensity taxi lights and guidance signs will also be upgraded to current Federal Aviation Administration standards, according to the county.
"Today's announcement is a testament to our continued commitment to strengthening critical infrastructure in our Capital Region and beyond," Tonko said. "Our Bipartisan Infrastructure Law is already tackling some of our nation's most pressing infrastructure needs — devoting significant funding to fixing our airports, roads, and bridges, upgrading our transit systems, and much more. Today, we are seeing those investments make a positive difference in the daily lives of those I serve in the Capital Region.
